Neither strong winds nor relentless rain could dampen the spirits of hundreds of runners who turned up in droves for our 10K run and 5k fun run.

What was already expected to be a challenging day due to the forecasted inclement weather could have  turned into a nightmare when an accident on the route of the 10k caused the road to be closed for a forensic examination. 

The sudden road closure could have derailed plans but thanks to the foresight and quick thinking of the highly organized organizing committee, a well-executed Plan B ensured the event ran smoothly despite the challenges.

“We’ve always had contingency plans in place for unforeseen circumstances, and today was proof of why that’s so important,” said Frank O’Connor of the organising committee. 

 “Our priority was to ensure the safety of everyone involved while minimizing disruptions to the event.”

For participants, the seamless transition to Plan B was evident. Many praised the committee’s proactive approach, noting how well-informed they felt throughout the day.

The course, already challenging, became even more formidable with the weather adding an extra layer of difficulty. Yet, from seasoned athletes to enthusiastic beginners, everyone rose to the occasion. Young children donned colorful rain jackets, while older participants braved the gusts with smiles and focused strides. The scene was a testament to the unifying power of running, with families, friends, and individuals all rallying together to cross the finish line.

As one young participant put it, “The rain just made it more fun!”

The event was a huge success marking as it did the memory of the late Brenda O’Connell ( nee Hartnett) with her family taking great pride in the turnout and the financial  contribution which will be made to Kerry Cancer Support Services Group. 

Indeed, the event proved that no matter the conditions, the passion for running and the sense of community it fosters can weather any storm.
