Getting to know William Harmon

6th January 2020 By Kerins O'Rahilly's PRO

Newly appointed bainisteoir of our seniors, William Harmon brings a wealth of experience to the role having been a selector with John Sugrue’s winning South Kerry county championship side in 2015 and then serving as bainisteoir in 2016, ’17 & ’18; they reached the final in 2017 only to lose out to Dr Crokes by a two point margin in a tight game which was remarkable for the accuracy exhibited by the Crokes attackers who shot 17 points from 19 attempts whilst South Kerry amassed 12 wides.

Along the way Kerins O’Rahillys loomed large on his horizon when the sides met 3 times in total, once in 2016 and twice in 2017. The 2015 champions were put to the pin of their collar in Austin Stack park in early May to see of the challenge from Strand Road and it took a couple of late goals to swing the game in their favour.
Strand Road gained some modicum of revenge in 2017 when a superlative second half display saw them shoot 2-06 without reply to garner a 4 point winning margin  – however, the battle hardened SK men had the final say when gaining a one point victory later in the year in Fitzgerald Stadium in the semi-final , 0-12 to 1-08.

From 2002-2007 he was Kerry GAA’s Games Promotion Officer based in IT Tralee before linking up with the LGFA where he has worked as National Development Officer where some of his key tasks included coaching and education, teacher training and support as well as conducting club coaching roadshows.

William had his first taste of management in his time at ITT when he guided the college to its one and only Trench Cup ( 2010) where he had Shane Brosnan as one of his defenders. He later managed his home club Milltown/Castemaine for a few seasons. In 2018 he again linked up with John Sugrue in Laois, this time in a coaching capacity.

He has represented the county as a minor in 1996 & 97 and U-21 in 1999.

Williams motivation is to challenge himself to try and further develop a team who have become serious contenders for honours over the past few years.

His management team will be comprised of Cork native Willie Power , who in addition to his football nous will also provide in depth performance analysis, former player John O’Connor and former club coach Paul Hayes.

Everybody at the club would like to wish William and the lads, the very best for  2020.
