County League U-14:
Kenmare was the venue on Weds night last for our 2nd game in Division 2 where we took on the locals. Kenmare were first round winners over Ardfert whilst we were pointless after losing a disappointing game to Fossa.
The line out on Wednesday was boosted by the returning TJ Heaphy and also Darragh O’Connor who had been absent through injury. Facing the stiff breeze we started brightly and had the first score of the game through Danny Hennessy when he pointed a free; Kenmare attacked and found the top corner of the net from an acute angle in the 3rd minute but we replied with a similar score from Ben O’Brien following good work from midfielder Jack Savage. We dominated for the next quarter of an hour and though we had points from Gearoid Meehan, Danny Hennessy and Darragh O’Connor we amassed a no of wides also in this period many from good positions – Kenmare kept the score board ticking over but we were two points to the good approaching half time when a good move by the opposition saw them breach our defence for a good goal which left the half time score, Kenmare 2-04 to Kerins O’Rahillys 1-06.
The second half saw Kenmare add to their tally with another green flag and suddenly we looked to be in trouble; however, Danny Hennessy tapped over 2 frees and when Tomás Kennedy goaled we were back in front again; full forward Ben O’Brien, outstanding all through, then added 1-01 and we now had a commanding lead – Kenmare struck back again with a goal but the last action saw Jack Savage career through the middle and hit an unstoppable shot to the roof of the Kenmare net. Final score: Kerins O’Rahillys 4-12, Kenmare 4-06.
All the boys deserve credit for their displays but on the night it was the strong defence of Jake Foley, Coren Hughes, Eric McMahon plus TJ Heaphy along with the midfield dominance of Jack Savage and the accuracy up front of Gearoid Meehan ( outstanding at wing forward), Danny Hennessy and Ben O’Brien that ensured victory. Darragh O’Connor was a welcome addition to our forward line and though a little ring rusty due to injury , added 3 important points.
We now concentrate on Féile over the coming weeks where we have been drawn with favourites Laune Rangers and Kilcummin – first rounds to take place on Weds night next 11th April in JP O’Sullivan park in Killorglin.
