Kerins O’Rahillys 3-6 Na Gaeil 3-17
(Donagh O’Brien reports)
In what was a lovely Saturday afternoon for football down in the club, our minor team, missing a few key players, came out the wrong side of the result.
Both sides started with 14 a side and it was the home team who got the first score of the game with TJ McMahon kicking a close range free. Na Gaeil went on to score five points in a row but then great work from both Conor O’Sullivan and Conor Hayes set up Ennis Reka whose low drive into the bottom corner reduced the score line to the bare minimum. From the resulting kick out Conor Hayes levelled with a point to make the game 1-2 to 0-5. Liam Magee put the Blues in front with a point but the lead was only short lived when Na Gaeil went down the other end to level the game again. Strand Road got their second goal when Magee, this time set up by TJ McMahon, volleyed the broken ball into the back of the net to put the Blues up by three. Na Gaeil again responded with a flurry of points to level the game going into half time at 2-3 to 0-9.
The second half started with the usual 15 a side, which was beneficial to all players with all 30 of them getting at least another 30 minutes of football under their belts. Na Gaeil came out fast, scoring 2-4 to make it a 10 point gap. A Conor O’Sullivan free reduced the defcit but Na Gaeil scored another four points in a row to widen their lead again. Strand Road’s number 11, Conor Hayes added 1-1 to his tally, while Graham O’Carroll also got his name on the scoreboard as Strand Road tried to reduce the deficit, but Na Gaeil got the last score of the game with their goal making the final score 3-6 to 3-17.
Mention to Darragh Reen of Na Gaeil who got 1-7 with a brilliant performance. Also a mention to O’Rahillys’ U16 player Jack Savage who played very well in his first minor game playing in midfield.
