Pride of place this week goes to our Strand Road team who won the group 1 league final on Friday night last 4th August when beating Spa Killarney in Castleisland on a final scoreline of 2-15 to 1-14.
This was a highly entertaining game punctuated with some great scores, hard tackles and some outstanding individual performances.
We played with the breeze in the opening half and were quickly on the scoreboard when Gaza Savage fired over from a free after 2 minutes.
This was quickly followed by a fine long range effort from a placed ball by Ryan Carroll (Chuckie) but Spa quickly levelled and by the 12th minute it was all tied up at 3 points each, our score coming from Captain John Keane.
We added a further points without reply with scores from John Keane again, Gaza from a free and Padraig Griffin from play to have us leading by 0-06 to 0-03 after 17 minutes.
Spa then hit us on the break for a goal and a point and against the run of play we were 1 behind.
However, on the 21st minute Donagh O’Brien latched on to ground ball and sent it whistling past the keeper to put us 2 points back in front. we added another 3 points between this and halftime through Gazz, Chuckie and Tom Hoare to leave us leading at the short whistle by 1-09 to 1-07.
Given the strength of the breeze it did not look like a 2 point advantage would be enough to secure the spoils.
On the resumption Spa were immediately on the scoreboard to leave the minimum between the sides.
It was then that a driving run from full back from Jason O’Leary saw him exchange passes with a number of colleagues and he planted the ball in the net for an outstanding score to put us 4 ahead – this was quickly followed b another John Keane point and suddenly it was Spa who were struggling.
From here to the finish, we maintained a minimum of a 3 point advantage thanks to some great defence and tracking back by our forwards who continued to tackle without fouling resulting in some great turnovers.
The game was 4 minutes into injury time when Chuckie crowned a great night for himself and the team by landing another long range effort from a dead ball from a difficult angle.
Great credit must go to Barry O’Shea, Eugene McGrath, Ken Savage and Liam Kissane for getting the best out of the lads and to all the team and substitutes who gave everything on the night to ensure we gained our first silverware of the season.
Team: Shane Foley, Kieran Mangan, Jason O’Leary, Gary Nolan, Rory O’Connor, Andrew Thompson, Robert O’Connor, Ryan Carroll (Chuckie), Rory Molloy, Donagh O’Brien, Padraig Griffin, Tom Hoare, Shane Flavin, Gearoid Savage (Gaza), John Keane (Captain). Subs: Darragh McElligott, John Dillane, Gearoid Hartnett & James O’Connor.
We travel to Caherciveen next Saturday 12th August to take on St. Mary’s in the penultimate round of the County Senior League Division 1.
With St. Mary’s on 8 points and us on 1 less a win for either side should guarantee Division 1 football for next season. Your support on the night would be greatly appreciated for a game that throws in at 19:00.
We have been drawn to play East Kerry in the quarter final of the county championship which will resume following Kerry’s exit from this year’s All Ireland championship.
This is a repeat of our 3rd round fixture from 2015 when we ran out convincing winners – East Kerry are a much different side now having a predominantly youthful side, many of whom have worn a county jersey in the past couple of seasons.
This week we held our annual summer camp and a massive success it was with 170 kids in attendance.
The sun didn’t really make an appearance but the rain stayed away and great fun was had by all with lot of skills been learnt. We had a great day Friday with the All Irelands and the special guests on the day were Barry John Keane and Jack Savage – the kids were thrilled and had a great opportunity to take pictures and get autographs from the Kerry /Narrie stars .
Thanks to everybody who gave up their time to help out with the training this week it would not have been a success without you .
