Venue: Strand Road Competition: County League Division 1, Round 4

A monster two-point score from Tom Hoare deep into injury time rescued a dramatic and hard-fought draw for Kerins O'Rahillys against Rathmore at Strand Road on Saturday evening. In a game where the visitors’ clinical goal-finishing threatened to take the points away, the Blues showed immense resilience to claw their way back from a substantial second-half deficit.

There were a few late alterations to the starting fifteen before the throw-in. Ruairi Kennedy stepped in between the posts for Con Barrett, making his first Senior County League appearance. Out the field, Padraig Griffin and Gearoid Savage replaced Daniel Bowler and Ben O'Brien.

The action was frantic right from the throw-in. Rathmore created an immediate goal-scoring opportunity in the opening minute, but Shane McElligott was perfectly positioned to take the ball off the line. Excellent tackling from Donagh Buckley forced several turnovers.

Kerins O'Rahillys opened their account when a turnover won by McElligott was swiftly moved up the field to find Conor Hayes for a well-worked score. However, Rathmore struck the first major blow in the 9th minute when Eoin Lawlor looped a deflected shot into the back of the net.

Darragh O'Connor kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side with some excellent link-up play with Barry John Keane, and later converted a 45 after seeing a rasping goal-bound shot excellently saved by Rathmore keeper William Casey.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession, the Blues found it difficult to penetrate the final line, whereas Rathmore were ruthless. On 22 minutes, a surging run through the middle by Andrew Moynihan set up Seanie McAuliffe for a cool finish to register Rathmore’s second goal. O'Connor responded by converting a two-point free after the ball was brought forward, keeping the Blues in touch.

The home side suffered a blow before the break when Donagh Buckley was forced off with an injury, replaced by Brayden Pierce.

Half-Time: Kerins O'Rahillys 0-06 (6) | Rathmore 2-04 (10)

The second half began with a gut punch for the Strand Road men. In the 34th minute, Ruairi Kennedy made a fantastic close-range save, but Rathmore's Andrew Moynihan was on hand to bundle the rebound home for their third goal.

Trailing heavily, O'Rahillys dug deep and began to assert control. Seamus Cahill, Jake Foley, and TJ Heaphy anchored a resolute defence that repeatedly disrupted the visitors and laid the foundation for the comeback. Further up the field, the hard running of Ben Hanafin and Gearoid Dillane proved instrumental in carving out chances, while Gearoid Savage and Padraig Griffin put in an impressive shift of hard graft and work rate.

Darragh O'Connor was a constant menace, converting from both play and placed balls to chip away at the lead. Around the 44-minute mark, a sustained period of pressure led to a blocked goal chance, with Jake Hoare reacting quickest to point the rebound.

The physical toll of the game continued as Shane McElligott took a heavy foul that resulted in a back injury, forcing him off for Con Barrett on 53 minutes. O'Connor stepped up to convert the resulting free, reducing the deficit to just three points. The fightback was heavily supported by the bench, with Ryan Carroll, Nick Lacey, Diarmuid O'Sullivan and Con all making solid appearances to keep the energy high.

Entering the dying moments, O'Connor nailed another crucial free following an off-the-ball foul on Conor Hayes. With the clock spilling over into deep injury time and the Blues desperately seeking salvation, Tom Hoare delivered. Stepping up when it mattered most, Hoare unleashed a monster two-point strike from play to tie the game, capping off an excellent fightback.
