Match Report: Killarney Legion v Kerins O’Rahillys
Date: Friday, June 19, 2026
Final Score: Killarney Legion 0-15 (15) – Kerins O'Rahillys 0-15 (15)
The action commenced with the throw-in at 7:30 PM in Johnny Culloty Park in Direen on a beautiful evening for football. Kerins O'Rahillys were first to register on the scoreboard in the 4th minute when Nick Lacey broke the deadlock, scoring off the outside of his boot from a tight angle. Legion answered quickly with a point from play. Stephen Nix showed great work rate around the middle third, linking up with Lacey who then fed Odhran Kerins for a well-taken point to restore the Blues' lead.
Both sides defended deep in the opening exchanges, with penetration into the rearguards proving difficult and leading to traded wides. Rob O'Connor was called into action in the 12th minute, producing a vital save to deny a Legion goal chance after the home side won a Strand Road kick-out. Conor O'Sullivan kicked a great point off his left foot from out on the left wing, and shortly after, a quick transition from Rob’s kick-out found Gearóid "Gazza" Savage, who jinked past his man and pointed with the outside of his boot.
Despite these bright moments, Kerins O'Rahillys struggled to maintain momentum as Legion began to enjoy some dominance at kickout time. Ryan O'Grady and Tom Benson added points for the home team to put us under a bit of pressure, but we were let off the hook by wides from Will Shine and another effort from O'Grady that struck the post.
Ben Hanafin's hard running was a bright spot for the Narries, but both teams were guilty of wastefulness. Despite a lovely dummy solo and point from Daniel Bowler and another score from Conor O'Sullivan, a free from Ryan O'Grady kept the scoreboard rolling on the Legion side. Jake Hoare tacked on a crucial point before the whistle, cutting in from the left to leave the half-time deficit at four points.
At the resumption the Blues came out with renewed intensity. Ben was finally rewarded for his relentless running, landing a sweet point to open the second-half scoring. A lively Nick Lacey added another after a sharp jink. The comeback gained real traction when Conor O'Sullivan kicked his third point of the night, followed immediately by Gearóid Savage stealing in around the back to level the game.
Momentum had completely shifted, and Odhran Kerins put Kerins O'Rahillys ahead for the first time in the half with a spectacular point from an acute angle. The lead was short-lived, however, as Legion substitute Peter McCarthy levelled proceedings with a booming point, before substitute Denis Sheahan edged them back in front.
With the game in the melting pot, Kerins O'Rahillys probed around the edges but initially failed to create a clear chance. Nick managed to level the match from a free after Legion were penalized for a touch on the ground.
At this point it was anyone’s game but with bodies beginning to tire in the heat both sides were guilty of a spate of wayward shooting.
Legion got their noses in front with a placed ball and when they stretched their lead to two following a lovely passage of forward play it looked like curtains for the Blues.
The away team dug in, however, and managed to dominate possession in the closing stages. Refusing to yield, Gearóid Savage chipped a vital point over off his left foot to close the gap to the minimum. As we ticked towards injury time, Jake Foley stepped up to secure a hard-earned draw, levelling the game at 0-15 apiece with a mighty point from distance.
All to play for heading into our final county league match at home to Glenflesk in two weeks' time. Thanks to all who travelled on Friday night, and looking forward to seeing a good Strand Road crowd the next day out.
