Kerins O’Rahillys got their Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Championship campaign off to a flying start in Currow on Saturday evening, delivering a powerful second-half performance in ideal conditions to secure a comprehensive 15-point victory over Castleisland Desmonds.

Despite facing a stiff breeze in the opening half and contending with a competitive Desmonds side, Strand Road’s extra gear, lethal goal-scoring touch, and athletic dominance across the field shone through as the game wore on.

The match opened at a blistering pace with Tomás Kennedy - named at full-forward but operating to great effect around the middle third - winning the opening throw-in and surging forward to point within seconds.

Playing into a strong headwind, O’Rahillys worked hard to build momentum. Darragh O’Connor registered early frees, while Barry John Keane curled over a nice effort from distance following slick buildup play involving Conor Hayes.

O'Rahillys also welcomed back Cormac Coffey directly into the starting lineup at wing-forward following his recent return from abroad. Coffey made an immediate impact, showing great sharpness, breaking lines, and winning crucial turnovers throughout.

Desmonds stayed firmly in the contest through the accurate place-kicking of Graham O’Connor. The Castleisland side received a huge boost midway through the half when Tomás Lynch bundled home a goal against the run of play to put Desmonds in front.

O’Rahillys responded immediately. The exceptional Ben Hanafin, who delivered a standout performance from wing-back, broke forward at pace, traded passes with Conor Hayes, and slotted a cool finish to the net to instantly restore the Blues’ momentum.

Moments later, Hanafin was at the heart of the action again; after an unbelievable burst through the Desmonds defense, he set up Barry John Keane for the simplest of finishes to raise Strand Road's second green flag. At the half-time whistle, O’Rahillys held a four-point advantage, leading 2-7 to 1-6.

With the wind at their backs for the second period, Strand Road slowly but surely took control.

While Desmonds notched early points through Luka Brosnan and Kian Downey, O’Rahillys soon shifted into high gear. Goalkeeper Ruairí Kennedy produced a sharp save to deny a Desmonds goal attempt, while Padraig Griffin made a crucial goal-line clearance soon after.

From that defensive stop, O’Rahillys launched a swift counter-attack as the driving Ben Hanafin picked out Tomás Kennedy, who slotted home O’Rahillys’ third goal in the 41st minute.

Hanafin’s work rate on both sides of the ball - securing turnovers, and driving the transition - proved central to O'Rahillys pulling away. Darragh O’Connor punished Desmonds from play and placed kicks to finish with six points on the night, while substitute Nick Lacey made an immediate mark off the bench with a pair of fine scores.

The contest was wrapped up five minutes from time. Cormac Coffey and Conor O'Sullivan combined brilliant pressure to turn over a Desmonds kickout, feeding Conor Hayes who expertly finished to the net for O’Rahillys’ fourth goal.

Barry John Keane capped a fine individual display (1-4) by striking a booming two-pointer from outside the boot, while late points from Jake Foley, Ben O'Brien, and substitute Gearoid Savage put the seal on a thoroughly convincing team victory. 

It was a complete team effort from front to back, with several players putting in huge shifts to ensure the victory. Jake Foley and Ben O'Brien were relentless in securing possession from kickouts throughout the hour. In defense, Seamus Cahill, Gearoid Dillane, and Daniel Bowler made life extremely difficult for the Desmonds attack with tough tackling and tight marking, while Conor O'Sullivan set the tone up front with an unselfish, tireless work rate off the ball.

O’Rahillys now turn their attention to Round 2, where they travel to face Glenflesk next Sunday afternoon at 4:00 PM.
